Sasha Petrenko: FOREST TIME WATER

Sasha Petrenko and a student with a white cane stand inside a large, geometric structure made of wooden rods in a darkened room. An image is projected on the wall behind them.In March 2023, Jack Straw and Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences (AVIA) presented an accessible youth and family art workshop at Jack Straw in conjunction with Sasha Petrenko’s New Media Gallery installation, Forest Time Water. Participants experienced Sasha’s work with an audio description from Jesse Minkert of Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences.

After exploring the installation and hearing about Sasha’s process and inspiration, participants learned about the concept of data sonification and how numbers can be translated into sound. Sasha and Jack Straw engineer Daniel Guenther guided attendees through the process of recording short musical samples, which were then manipulated and looped into an original soundscape. Before concluding, participants had the opportunity to explore the recorded samples and create their own unique mix.
