Jack Straw resident artist Suchitra Iyer celebrates the release of her album Sunaad, produced with help from the Jack Straw Artist Support Program and 4Culture. Meet the artist, hear about the album creation, and enjoy a short performance.
Suchitra’s album is a curated collection of Hindustani classical compositions by Indian-American composers from the Pacific Northwest. The songs showcase different aspects of North Indian music, from lyrical to percussive to devotional. She studied the compositions with her teacher Srivani Jade and recorded the album in collaboration with Manoj Deshpande, who plays tabla (drums), and Deepashri Joglekar and Amruta Mali on harmonium. She seeks to highlight the rich Hindustani classical tradition being sustained by the diaspora in the Greater Seattle area.
