Topographies – Gabriella Garcia

Gabriella Garcia‘s project for the 2026 Jack Straw Writers Program is a series of poems, each overlaid on maps of rivers and mountains where the poems take place. In her conversation with curator Claudia Castro Luna, they talk about the story of her  opera Waiting, her interest in writing from non-human perspectives, and the authors in environmental literature that inspire her. “I really enjoy reading a lot of environmental literature and literature about things kind of outside of our understanding or experiences in nature. And honestly, I’m a little tired of the human perspective. . . . I feel like there’s something about the trees and the story of the trees that spoke to me.”

Music by Star Gondola, produced through the Jack Straw Artist Support Program.
