The Steal – Sayantani Roy
Sayantani Roy’s project for the 2026 Jack Straw Writers Program is a series of short stories that focus mostly on the small towns of her home state of West Bengal, the people who live there, and the changes that have taken place there over time. In her conversation with curator Claudia Castro Luna, they talk about the geography of India, the recent exodus of people from the countryside to the big city of Kolkata, and how big city culture has encroached on small towns. “India is so diverse, so big, so many cultures. So that’s one of the reasons I want to put these stories out, hopefully, some day as a collection. So that people know more about it.”
Music by Star Gondola, produced through the Jack Straw Artist Support Program.
