Salmon Suite is a collection of five poems by Seattle
poet Judith Roche about
the dynamic life cycle of the Pacific Northwest's
native wild salmon. Salmon Suite is produced as part
of the Seattle Arts Commission's Salmon in the City
project to foster awareness of the recent listing of
Chinook Salmon as threatened under the Endangered
species act of the United States. A series of artist
initiated public art projects are located in
communities around the city.
The project is presented at the Hiram Chittenden Locks in Seattle's historic Ballard district, which are the gateway to the Seattle watershed and a very important site to the salmon. A poster of the "Salmon Suite" poems designed by Barbara Longo will be on display at the fish viewing windows at the visitors center together with an interactive CD produced by Jack Straw Productions engineer Matthew Bauer. The CD consists of recorded information intertwining the poems with existing informational material at the Locks. The public can press a button at the fish-viewing windows and hear Judith's poems woven into text already written by the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Locks.
