My hand in the water
Your hand in the water
Our hands in the water

Long before the rose had thorn
We swam the seas
Then you were born

When the moon pours light upon the waters
Then pulls round first tide, then time
Calling forth both sons and daughters
To earth-bound rhythms tied, then rhyme

When you are in love,
You are caught and consumed by another.
And this begs the question:
Is it our beauty or courage brings this consummation?
So often, satisfied with one, you leave the other behind.
As the blood and bones of the earth we can tell you:
  One thing is always another.

We who have never seen the sky know it is falling.
How will we find this home who no longer smell the water
And feel only the pull of earth
Become the gravity of death
    And we ask
Will this machine devour itself in time?
