Jovino Santos Neto
Composer-In-Residence

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1954, Jovino Santos Neto came to the U.S. in 1993 to reside in Seattle, WA. Since his arrival, Jovino has performed and/or recorded with Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Joyce, Andy Narell, Dori Caymmi and many other artists. Caboclo, his first CD as a group leader, was released in 1997 by Liquid City Records. He is also active as an arranger and producer for several jazz and world music projects. Jovino is well-known for his 15 years of contributions to the legendary group led by Brazil's master of contemporary music, Hermeto Pascoal, with whom he produced several award-winning recordings and performed on many world tours. As an artist and educator, he has since devoted himself to bringing Pascoal's work to a deservedly wider audience. To that end, Jovino has been archiving and preparing for publication the first authoritative editions of Hermeto's compositions. Jovino's universal approach to playing, composing and teaching has led him into a diversity of creative circles ranging far beyond his own roots, including collaborations with Native American musicians and artists. His contemporary string arrangements of Mandan tribal songs are featured on the new Makochˇ Records release, People of the Willows. Currently Associate professor of Music at Cornish College of the Arts and an active member of the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Jovino's educational activities include residencies ranging from elementary schools to music colleges. He was recently chosen as featured artist-educator for the Harman Corporation's How to Listen series. For further information, visit Jovino's Web site at www.emeraldnet.net/~realengo

Jack Straw Productions
West Coast Host Organization

Jack Straw Productions, the Northwest's audio arts center, has been a community resource for young, emerging, and established composers since 1962. Dedicated to the production and presentation of all forms of audio art, Jack Straw's areas of focus are arts and heritage partnerships, arts and technology education, and its Artist Support Program. Through this program, over four-hundred musicians, composers, and audio artists have been provided the means to complete recording projects in Jack Straw's studios, thereby furthering their careers and enriching the new music community of the Northwest. Jack Straw has produced several series of radio programs focusing on the works and lives of local composers, such as From Composer to Performance, which explored the process of composing and performing works of new music, and Sinister Resonance, which was based on live concerts of new music and interviews with composers including Janice Giteck. In the past five years, more than two hundred non-commercial radio stations have broadcast Jack Straw programs, which have received five national awards for artistic excellence. In the past several years, Jack Straw has expanded its outreach efforts with a growing list of audio art and technology programs for local youth at elementary, junior, and high school levels. Jack Straw's website features a variety of new music excerpts of all genres from their programs, and they have broadcast live concerts over the internet.
