Seeing with Sound: AVIA and Jack Straw Accessible Youth Art Workshops

Zack Bent: Lean-out, Lean-to

In January 2015 Jack Straw and Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences (AVIA) presented a pair of accessible workshops at Jack Straw in conjunction with Zack Bent's New Media Gallery installation Lean-out, Lean-to, which incorporates sculpture, sound, and video.

Over two consecutive weekends, sighted and visually impaired students from Seattle and around the region participated in hands-on art and sound workshops with Zack and Jack Straw teaching artists. The installation was audio described for the visually impaired by Jesse Minkert of AVIA.

For the first workshop, students created sound-making objects with artists Zack Bent and Gala Bent, and foley sound effects with Jack Straw engineer Daniel Guenther and teaching artists Dominic CodyKramers and Gin Hammond.

For the second workshop, the students created sound toys with sound artist Susie Kozawa, and worked with Daniel, Dominic, and Lynne Compton of AVIA to create stories with sound in Jack Straw's studios.

Students used a story template based on the gallery installation and written for the workshop by Jesse Minkert. Students filled in the blanks,  performed narration and dialogue, and created sound effects.
