Recent Education Projects

* Radio Shorties Production Class with Seattle Center Academy
(July 30-August 11 2006)
"Radio Shorties" covers all aspects of short-form radio production: vox-pop, field recording, interviewing, and feature production. Students will plan and implement several radio projects, and take them from pre-production through recording, scripting, narration, editing, and final mix.

* Blind Youth Audio Project
For the 10th year, JSP, in coordination with Arts for Visualyl Impaired Audiences and the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind, will welcome blind and visually impaired students to a series of workshops through the month of July. Projects will include music recording and productions, sound design, and radio theater, incorporating the fully accessible Caketalking/Sonar digital audio workstation.

* TOPS "Family Cultural Celebrations"
Two eighth grade classes from The Options Program at Seward recently completed their "Family Cultural Celebrations" project. Students wrote original vignettes about their families' holidays, celebrations, and traditions. Over two full days the students visited the studio to record their stories as well as their own foley sound effects, and begin mixing of the final pieces.

* Hamilton International Middle School ELL "Now and Then"
Students in the 8th grade ELL class at Hamilton International Middle School wrote two stories each: "Now," and "Then." The students then recorded each of their stories at JSP as well as foley sound effects to bring them to life.

* John Stanford Elemtary School ELL "My Special Place"
Students in the ELL program at John Stanford Elementary in Wallingford visited the Jack Straw studios during May to record "My Special Place," a collection of vignettes about important personal experiences from the students' past. Fourteen second- through fifth-grade students recorded their stories, selected ambient sound beds, and began editing their final pieces. A celebration was held at the Wallingford Starbucks on July 19, when the students listened to all of their completed pieces. Special thanks to the Starbucks Foundation and the Wallingford Starbucks for making this project possibble.
