1/02 Cleveland High School/ Comet Lodge Cemetery Jack Straw staff trained Cleveland High School students working on an oral history-based project about Comet Lodge Cemetery in the areas of oral history interviewing, and in field-recording techniques using professional cassette recorders.
1/02-2/02 Olympic View Elementary Olympic View Elementary is celebrating its centennial this year. Two 5th grade classes led by teachers, created radio plays based on stories selected from their interviews with former Olympic View students, staff and faculty.
2/02, 4/02 World of Words — International Women Writers (Seattle Arts & Lectures A World of Words is an international program for women writers that is a collaboration between Hedgebrook Writer's Retreat, Jack Straw Productions and Seattle Arts and Lectures. Two writers gave presentations and conducted workshops in a variety of schools in Seattle.
3/02 Franklin High School Multi-media students worked with Jack Straw artists and engineers to perform, record and produce original pieces.
3/02-4/02 Pathfinder Middle School Students listed to a Duwamish story as told by artist Roger Fernandez, and then worked with Jack Straw artists and engineers to re-tell the story in the form of radio theater.
4/02 Bush Elementary School Second grade students wrote PSAs related to issues of environmental conservation, and recorded and produced their pieces with artists and engineers at Jack Straw’s studios.
4/02 Emerging Voices/ Nathan Hale (Two workshops) Local teen writers wrote, performed and recorded their work at Jack Straw studios.
4/02-5/02 Stevens Elementary School Teams of students in two fifth grade classes wrote radio plays about events in Seattle’s history. Students then worked with Jack Straw’s artists and engineers to record and produce their work.
4/02-5/02 Happy Medium Preschool and elementary school students performed and recorded songs written specifically for them by a local artist.
5/02 Hamilton International Middle School ESL students wrote audio vignettes about their favorite celebrations either in their country of origin or in the US. Students then worked with Jack Straw’s audio engineers and artists to record and produce their work in the form of radio theater.
5/02 Lopez High School A high school rock band performed and recorded their original work at Jack Straw studios.
5/02-6/02 Kimball Elementary School Immigration Project Three fifth grade classes worked with Jack Straw’s artist team to conduct oral history interviews with immigrant community members. Students then took the stories they collected and wrote, performed, recorded and produced them in the form of radio theater.
5/02-6/02 Do Tell Jack Straw’s student work has been made into a series of radio spots on Bellevue Community Colleges station, KBCS. One piece is being broadcast each weekday afternoon, with a repeat on Saturday mornings.
5/02-6/02 PSKS (Arts Up — Homeless Youth) Local homeless youth (organized by PSKS/ Peace on the streets by Kids on the streets) came to Jack Straw studios to record their accounts of life on the streets through interviews with two New York artists.
5/02-6/02 Sacajewea Elementary Schol (Arts Up — Multi-ethnic Youth) Students participated in a series of multi-disciplinary and multi-media arts projects with composer Janice Giteck and Audio engineer Wrick Wolff.
7/02 Blind Youth Audio Project Blind high school students from accross Washington State come to Seattle and participated in a month-long series of workshops involving music recording, original radio theater production, recording techniques, and creative use of sound. A documentary of the project has been produced for the Evergreen Radio Reading Service for the Blind.
9/02 Teen Aware High School students from accross the state met in Ellensberg, Washington, for the "Teen Aware" abstinence education conference. A group of students participated in a workshop with a Jack Star producer, learning the techniques to develop and produce public service announcements promoting abstinence among teens.
9/02 Cambodian Youth Project Students from the Rainier Vista Community Center's Cambodian Youth Project recorded excerpts from the original play "With-in." Sound Effects and original music were added, creating a complete radio drama from the original stage play.
10/02- 11/02 Hamilton International Middle School Students with Chinese heritage wrote vignettes celebrating "Chinese Celebrations," and recorded their pieces, in the studio, incorporating original sound effects and music.
12/02 Brighton Elementary School Fifth grade students at Brighton Elementary interviewed Alumni who attended Brighton, and then wrote radio plays based on those stories. The final pieces were recorded and produced at Jack Straw Productions.
12/02 Vashon Schools -- Chautaqua Elementary and McMurray Middle School Two fifth grade classes from Chautauqua Elementary wrote original "fractured fairy tales," which were recorded on-site with live foley sound effects, in the tradition of live radio theater. McMurray Middle School's Theater Tech class received audio recording and audio in theater workshops, and live recordings as well as digital multitrack versions of short radio plays.
