Date Project Description
1/00-2/00 Bryant Elementary School Oral history radio theater project with three fifth grade classes. Students interviewed several Bryant alumni who told stories of their memories from Bryant. Students wrote, performed, and produced radio plays based on these stories.
2/00 Thomas Jefferson High School Multi-media students will attend and document an instrument building and percussion workshop, and participate in a music/web design workshop with artists involved in the Virtual Concert project. Students will later produce a video documentary about both Virtual Concert residencies (1999-2000).
2/00 Bertschi School Third-grade students will participate in an instrument building and performance workshop with jazz composer and performer Jovino Santos Neto and members of new music ensemble Musicians Accord.
2/00 Cornish & Jack Straw African Music project Composer and pianist Amy Rubin visited Cleveland High School and the Northwest School classes to discuss African music and culture. JSP held assemblies at each school with African musicians from our Safarini recording project.
3/00 West Seattle High School Hedgebrook artist/ Film maker, and an Arts and Lectures writer worked with students at West Seattle High School to develop vignettes that students later performed and produced with artists and engineers at Jack Straw’s studios.
3/00 Northwest School Janice Giteck wrote a new composition with students in ESL, choir, and music ensemble classes at Northwest School. The new piece was performed at Seattle’s Town Hall.
3/00 Federal Way High School Students in a U.S. History class worked with Jack Straw artists, producers, audio engineers, and educators to create radio features based on immigration themes. Marcie Sillman of KUOW worked as the production advisor for the project.
4/00 Bryant Elementary School Three third grade classes painted a mural based on the fifth grade’s radio dramas. Bryant community members interviewed 20+ other Bryant alumni. JSP is coordinating this project, and professionally recording these interviews. The recordings will soon be permanently housed at the Bryant School Library, and at the Northeast Branch of the Seattle Public Library so that the public may check out copies.
5/00 Alternative School #1 Composer Janice Giteck, parent/percussionist Matthew Kocmieroski, and members of the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra will work with third through eighth grade art classes. Students will explore the common threads of music and art through a variety of hands-on activities. The residency will also look at music and visual arts as expressive tools for gaining a deeper understanding of social history.
5/00 Franklin High School A team of artists and engineers from Jack Straw Productions worked with a multi-media class for a day-long music production workshop. Student musicians performed pieces and all students helped record and produce a compilation CD.
6/00 Selected schools for ASP/multidisciplinary arts Artists from Jack Straw Productions Artist Support Program will be featured artists at a series of schools. Artists will focus on the creative process and the creative uses of audio in a variety of art forms.
6/00 Young Blind Writers Jack Straw Productions in conjunction with Arts & Visually Impaired Audiences and the Radio Reading Service will initiate a new program for young blind writers with writer Rebecca Brown. Students will work with Rebecca on their writing, which they will present in an evening at Jack Straw and which will be recorded for broadcast on the Radio Reading Service throughout Washington State.
6/00 Echo Glen Children’s Center Composer Janice Giteck and writer Judith Roche will return to Echo Glen for a residency with teenage girls.
7/00 Blind Youth Audio Project High school students from various locations in Washington State participated in a month-long creative radio production project with Jack Straw, Arts & Visually Impaired Audiences, Department of Services for the Blind, and a team of artists.
8/00 Radio Theatre Camp 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students conceived, wrote, rehearsed and produced an original radio theatre piece.
7/00-8/00 Seattle Center Academy Middle school students from districts all over King County met at the Seattle Center every day for a two-week intensive arts camp. The JSP project involved interviewing local artists from three disciplines, and writing, recording and producing radio plays about their lives. The radio plays were performed live at the conclusion of the session.
10/00 A World of Words Chinese writer He Dong spoke at Nathan Hale High School and Chief Sealth School in conjunction with Seattle Arts & Lectures and Hedgebrook.
10/00-12/00 Greenwood Elementary School Oral History Project Oral history radio theatre project for fifth grade students who interviewed several Greenwood alumni representing various periods in the school's history, and adapted their stories into scripts. Students wrote, performed, and produced radio plays based on these stories.
11/00 Cleveland High School Peace Assembly Voice and speech presentational skills workshop and recording of the event with on-site mentoring with a Jack Straw high school intern.
11/00-12/00 Environmental and Adventure School Immigration Oral History and Radio Theatre Project
11/00 John Stanford International School Day of the Dead assemblies with traditional Mexican musician Juan Barco and his ensemble.
11/00 Musicians Accord Chamber music event at Franklin High School
12/00 Greenwood Elementary School Historical Radio Drama-based Mural Project w/Jose Orantes Fourth grade classes painted a mural based on the fifth grade's radio drama plays which were developed from oral history interviews.
12/00 Franklin High School Multi-media class Performance and Recording Workshop
1/00-12/00 Audio Arts Internships for Middle/High School students 45-hour quarterly internships which include audio arts training, mentorship with an engineer for work on a special project, and observation of professional studio recording sessions.
