Composer Spotlight:
Münir Beken & Gus Denhard
Oil and Vinegar: New Music and Non-Western traditions

Wed, September 9, 7:30pm

Münir Beken will give a lecture-demonstration on the use of non-western musical instruments in new music.  He will give live and recorded examples from his own music, particularly the use of Turkish ud in Western traditional settings.   Lutenist Gus Denhard will join him to perform examples from their recent collaboration and their 2008 Jack Straw Artist Support Program project.

Münir Nurettin Beken, ud virtuoso and composer, studied composition with Cemal Resit Rey, Yalçın Tura, and Stuart Smith, and participated in composition workshops with such luminaries as George Crumb, Lukas Foss, Philip Glass, Roger Reynolds, Steve Reich, and Charles Wuorinen. The world premier of his Blue Monologue for solo violin was performed at Carnegie Hall. This year Pacific Serenades Chamber Music Ensemble performed the world premier of his most recent composition, Memories of a Shoehorn, in Los Angeles, and last April Issa Sonus Chamber Music Ensemble featured several of his compositions in two concerts in New York City.  Münir Beken is currently Assistant Professor of theory and composition in Ethnomusicology Department at University of California Los Angeles.

Coming Up: Wed, October 14, 7:30pm
Serge Gregory, Susie Kozawa, & Esther Sugai

Filmmaker Serge Gregory and sound artists Susie Kozawa & Esther Sugai will discuss the process of creating the soundtrack for Gregory's recent film When Herons Dream.
