Composer Spotlight:
Sean Osborn
Cyrille Rose & the Clarinet
Wed, November 12, 7:30pm
Cyrille Rose was one of the foremost clarinet pedagogues of the 19th century. Clarinetist Sean Osborn discusses his recent recording of Cyrille Rose's 32 Etudes, made with a 2006 Artist Support grant from Jack Straw, and composing for the clarinet. Covered topics will include Rose's novel use of phrasing, the clarinets range, dynamic range, repertoire, technical possibilities, and "extended" techniques such as quarter-tones, multi-phonics, pitch bends, and other subjects.
Sean Osborn has traveled the US, Europe, and Japan as soloist and chamber musician, and traveled the world during his eleven years with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He has also appeared as guest principal clarinet with the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Seattle Symphony, and the American Symphony Orchestra. The New York Times dubbed him “...an excellent clarinetist,” the Boston Globe called him “...a miracle,” and Gramophone “...a master.”
