Stephen Cavit is resident composer for the St. James Cathedral Choir in Seattle. He's been commissioned many times by the Cathedral as well as by other groups such as Opus 7, who will be premiering his latest choral work, "Dareeché", a setting of a poem by the well-known Persian poet, Azar Khadjavi. In addition to premieres in the United States, Stephen has premiered works in Europe and has performed for Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.

Stephen composes regularly for film and television. His first feature film score, for The Four Corners of Nowhere, premiered at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival. His most recent score for Everything’s Cool premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. He's contributed music to the films Chuck & Buck and The Good Girl for director Miguel Arteta (Sundance, 2000 and 2002). Other recent work includes the film Blue Vinyl (Sundance 2002) and the TV series Family Bonds, both for HBO; The Meaning of Food, a miniseries for PBS; Knocking, a film for the Independent Lens series on PBS; Prom Night in Kansas City for USA network; and The Cult of Cindy, an original film for AMC. Stephen also contributed regularly to the MTV shows The Real World and Road Rules. In addition, Stephen was awarded one of six fellowships to the 2000 Sundance Composers Lab where he studied with composers such as Carter Burwell (Fargo), George S. Clinton (Austin Powers 1 & 2) and Graeme Ravel (Sin City). In 2005, Stephen was invited to attend BMI’s prestigious Conducting Workshop where he studied with renowned conductor Lucas Richman.

The Composer Spoltight series is presented by Jack Straw Productions and Washington Composers Forum (WCF). This series of talks and performances of new music highlights an innovative composer or performer every second Wednesday of each month at Jack Straw Productions. WCF is a non-profit arts organization that nurtures the creation, performance, and dissemination of new music by composers living in Washington State. Since its founding in 1984, WCF has produced concerts, readings, and lectures in the U.S. and Canada, representing many composers in the region.
