Composer Spotlight:
Samantha Boshnack and Reptet
How to Commit Agendacide
Wed, March 10th, 7:30pm
For the past six years Samantha Boshnack has been composing heavily for the modern-jazz sextet Reptet. That band is composed of Boshnack on trumpet, slide trumpet, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn; Izaak Mills on tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, flute; Nelson Bell-trombone, tuba; Chris Credit on alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, clarinet; Tim Carey on upright bass, electric bass; and John Ewing on drums, percussion. Reptet regularly tours the U.S. and Canada, performing in a variety of venues, from rock to jazz clubs and festivals, to concert halls, even school auditoriums.
Boshnack, a Bard College graduate, will talk about methods she uses in composing for this unorthodox jazz instrumentation. She will also discuss how the pieces grow and morph, along with the members of Reptet, as the works are rehearsed, toured, and then recorded. She will also talk about the new Reptet 7" vinyl, 'Agendacide,' which features two of her compositions (made possible by a Jack Straw's Artist Support Grant). Reptet will play the songs featured on 'Agendacide,' and some other new works composed by Boshnack since then.
While becoming a part of the Seattle music scene, composer/trumpeter Samantha Boshnack has been creating music of her own since 2003. She paints from a broad palette, including jazz, rock, hip-hop, Balkan, and contemporary classical music, in building her music, receiving acclaim from music critics around the world. She has received support from 4Culture, Jack Straw Productions, ASCAPlus, and the City of Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs.
