Sarah Bassingthwaighte

Wednesday, January 10, 7:30pm

Sarah Bassingthwaighte is an award-winning flutist, composer, and educator living in Seattle. In addition to performing as a soloist, she performs regularly as a member of Sorelle, Affinity, and Windsong, and with many chamber groups.

Her solo recordings of music for flute and electronics have appeared on the Centaur and CCMC labels, and her solo CDs, Stalks in the Breeze of 20th century works for flute alone, and Flute Meets Machine, music for flute and electronics, have been released on the Pandora label this fall. Other recordings in progress include new electroacoustic music by British composers, and a recording of lesser-known Baroque works for flute and harpsichord.

She has been on the UW flute faculty since April 2006, and also is adjunct professor of flute at Seattle University. Bassingthwaighte coaches frequently, including for the Seattle Youth Symphony organization, and appears regularly as an adjudicator in the Northwest. In summer 2001, she served on the faculty of the Rachmaninov Institute in Tambov, Russia, performing and teaching master classes for their Summer Festival.

Bassingthwaighte is a past president of the Seattle Flute Society and served on the programming committee for the National Flute Association in 2001. She was a featured speaker and performer at the 2001 National Flute Convention in Dallas, where she premiered a trio by Salvador Brotons. She currently also serves on the board of the Gallery Concert Series, a series of Baroque and classical music on historical instruments.

She has worked closely with a number of composers, including Seattle composers Richard Karpen and Diane Thome, especially in the field of electroacoustic music. She actively commissions new pieces for solo flute or chamber ensembles, and has been responsible for the commission, performance, and recording of more than 25 new pieces.
