WRITERS PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

Established and emerging artists working in any discipline or genre may apply to any one of the residency programs offered. Artists living outside of the Puget Sound region may apply, but should be aware that expenses for travel, lodging, etc. are not included in the award. Literary groups applying to the Writers Program are limited to three persons.

Current Jack Straw staff, interns, board members, panelists, or their immediate family members may not apply. Artists participating in 2008 programs may not apply again for the same program in 2009, however, they may apply for a program in which they did not participate in the previous calendar year.

You may apply to more than one artist program, but must submit a complete and separate set of applications for each program. Note: The Writers Program has a separate form and set of guidelines from the Artist Support and New Media Gallery Programs.

WRITERS PROGRAM SELECTION PROCESS

Applications are evaluated and awarded by an invited curator. The curator changes each year. The Writers Program curator is Donna Miscolta, a Jack Straw Writer from the inaugural year of the program. All applicants will be notified of the results in writing. Please allow at least twelve weeks after deadline dates for the review and notification process to be completed.

2009 Writers Program curator Donna Miscolta has received writing awards from 4Culture Artist Trust, Seattle City Artists and others. She recently won the Bread Loaf/Rona Jaffe Foundation Scholarship in Fiction.  She’s been a Hedgebrook resident and was selected for the Jack Straw Writers Program in its inaugural year.  Her poems have appeared on the King County Poetry Bus Project, and the Poetry on Wheels anthology (Floating Bridge Press). Her short fiction has been published in Raven Chronicles, The Americas Review, Seattle Magazine, New Millennium Writings, Calyx, and others, and has been aired on public radio. She makes her living as a project manager for King County. Donna was recently announced as winner of a 2008 Breadloaf-Rona Jaffe Scholarship.

WRITERS PROGRAM SELECTION CRITERIA

The Writers Program receives more than a hundred applicants, from which 12 writers are selected. The curator will base her selections upon the excellence of the work represented in the support materials provided by the applicant, and his or her subjective response to the applicant’s work sample in comparison to the other submissions received.
