On May 1, Jack Straw Productions presents the folksinger Jim Page and Seattle icon Artis the Spoonman and the percussion ensemble One World Taiko in the spring Jack Straw Artist Showcase. This unique double bill features folk and percussion "traditions" from two very different groups.
Jim Page has been on the music scene for more than 20 years, and he has shared the stage with Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Dan Bern, Michelle Shocked, Leftover Salmon, Mickey Hart, J.J. Cale, Robert Hunter, Chuck Brodsky, and John Hammond. His songs have been performed by Christy Moore, Michael Hedges, John Trudell, The Doobie Brothers, Joanne Rand, Casey Neill, and (yes) David Soul. http://www.myspace.com/seattlejimpage
Artis the Spoonman has performed on the sidewalks and bars of Seattle, San Francisco, Manhattan, Sidney, London, Dublin, Munich and Singapore, the theatres of Broadway, the stages of international and national television, and the recording studios of Frank Zappa and Soundgarden. His spellbinding, faster-than-the-eye-can-track spoonplaying has been a passionate rhythm enhancement for Rock, Fusion, Folk, Jazz, Bluegrass, Classical and Uncatagorizable music, virtually everywhere. His avante-garde percussion, coupled with his contagious spirit, will change your life - or at least your ideas on cutlery. http://www.artisthespoonman.org/
One World Taiko presents a contemporary style of Japanese drumming that incorporates dynamic and fluid movement as well as heart pounding percussion. The music is drawn from Japan's ancient tradition of lively and spirited festival drumming and One World Taiko’s own creative rhythms, arrangements and choreography, adding a modern spirit to the ancient tradition of taiko. Their repertoire includes traditional pieces, which were taught to them by the world-renowned groups Kodo and Ondekoza from Japan, and their own original compositions infused with contemporary rhythms from their love of jazz and world music. http://www.oneworldtaiko.com/

Jack Straw Artist Support Program
Jack Straw Productions' Artist Support Program assists artists in various disciplines who are interested in exploring and incorporating sound into their creative work. This program has two tiers: 1) Artist Support, which provides 20 hours of studio recording and audio production services free of charge in a professional setting; and 2) Artist Assistance, which provides 40 hours of partially subsidized studio services. The overall program provides organizational support for producing events such as the Meet the Artist Night and the Artist Showcase, which highlights both levels of accepted projects. Applications will be available in September.
